LOBSTER FESTIVAL 2009 MUSIC

GOOD FOOD AND GREAT MUSIC!

ROCK THE DOCKS ALL WEEKEND WITH THESE GREAT BANDS!

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH, 2009
* Due to Nik Frost's foot injury, The Bangkok Five will not be performing. We wish him a speedy recovery

FULL METAL JACKIE

INDIE 103.1’s hottest internet star, Full Metal Jackie, is back and ready to party. Friday night’s lineup features three pin-your-ears-to-your-head so they don’t get blown away bands. If you have what it takes to hang out on the docks and want to party hearty with the home team, here’s what Jackie has in store for you Friday night at the Lobster Festival:

7:00pm
SPIDER PROBLEM

We aren't holding back one bit this weekend, we're kicking out the jams and launching our "Rock the Docks" weekend with Spider Problem. We're talking Saturn 5 Moon Rocket Launch rock and roll. They spun their web in August at Little Radio's Summercamp, and this Friday they are bringing it to the docks like a blast of hot summer heat. Find out what we mean by "Rock the Docks" starting at 7 pm Friday night with Spider Problem. No bug spray permitted, they are delivering an overdose of arachnorocknroll.

8:00pm
THE BINGES

No matter how you describe them, The Binges will rock your soul and leave you wanting more. There’s a reason they are back this year, and if you missed them last year here’s your chance to enjoy their show of fist pumping, hard stomping, orbital velocity rock and roll. Don’t miss the LA music scene’s hardest rocking act on the third rock from the sun Friday night at the Lobster Festival. (Photo by Peter Dokus)

9:00pm
DILANA

Dilana comes to LA via Houston, which just happens to be the home of NASA’s mission control. This may explain why Dilana rocketed to the top in “Rock Star Supernova” and afterwards her career entered orbit, touching down to do gigs at venues like the Viper Room and Cinespace Hollywood. This multi-national South African draws inspiration from Janis Joplin and Tina Turner, but for us Dilana’s all the inspiration we need to have her kick off our Rock the Docks Concert Weekend.

THE 11TH ANNUAL LOBSTERDOG PET PARADE

The 11th annual LobsterDog Pet Parade is coming to Ports O'Call Village in San Pedro on Saturday, September 19th at 12:00pm. It's all part of the weekend of fun at the annual Lobster Festival.

1:00pm
PIRATES OF THE BLACK SWAN ON THE MAIN STAGE

For the families and kids after the LobsterDog parade, a musical show from Capt. Bad Jack and his Doxies.

2:00pm
OLIVER FUTURE

Chris Douridas, KCRW-FM called Oliver Future “...on my short list of the Best New Bands of 2007.” Their album “Pax Futura” was hailed as one of the better surprise releases that year. We first heard them on stage at the Troubador and again at the Echoplex and on the bill at the prestigious Sunset Junction Festival. They come to us by way of Austin, Texas, bringing with them what has been described by one reviewer as “a Jackson Pollack’d eruption of searing rock and roll..

3:00pm
THE HENRY CLAY PEOPLE

Since last year this band has paid its dues. On tour for the second year with Airborne Toxic Event, they are taking away a day to appear at the Lobster Festival to share with us their new music. Next year they’ll have a tour of their own. Last year we told you to come see them so you can have bragging rights when they play Dodger Stadium. Well, that day may come sooner than you think. Up close, personal, rock with the Henry Clay People at the Lobster Festival.

4:00pm
LOVE GRENADES

Love Grenades’ creator Elizabeth Wight likes to call herself a “working-class LA girl”. After catching their show at the Viper Room before they took off on a month’s worth of European concerts we think “hard working” better describes the show she delivers. At the Viper Room we saw each song blended into the other and the only time we got a brief break was when her laptop that was driving the remix locked up and had to be rebooted. This was a the only time we caught our breath during their non-stop 45 minute show. The Love Grenades music shuffles the deck between disco and raucous rock, something totally original that will have you dancing like a fool.

5:00pm
DIOS

Sometimes we get lucky and find a great band literally in our own backyard. When we do it’s an honor to offer them a good slot in our lineup. DIOS is one of those bands, whose members hail from San Pedro and the South Bay. DIOS’ music is refined, subtle and sophisticated. You will hear a touch of iconic surfer guitar riffs (someone paying homage to the Beach Boys?) and harmonies like the later work from the Beatles. Yet it’s all completely original, unlike any band out there. Enjoy.

6:00pm
SHORTY'S KISS BAND

We’re kicking off the evening with an encore performance of the infamous, notorious tribute to KISS from Shorty Rossi? So tighten your seat belts, put your tray tables in their upright position, assume the crash position and get ready to rock in Saturday night with Shorty’s KISS Band. You are in for almost an hour of sidesplitting, hard rock from one of the biggest acts in show business.

7:00pm
DAZZLER

Now that Shorty’s KISS threw the on switch for the Saturday evening’s party, we’re turning the stage over to DAZZLER to turn up the volume. And who better, as they like to say, the all went to art school. More like School of Rock to us. They’ve shared the stage at the Hammer Museum’s “I like to Rock” series with the likes of Band of Skulls and Amazing Baby and spent the summer on tour with Anavan. The call their music “epic dance rock” and judging from how they packed the Hammer, we’d say they are a hit unto themselves.

8:00pm
ROCKET

We first met ROCKET on the American Idol spinoff “The Next Great American Band” where they were the only all-girl band in the competition. Their unique mixing of 60’s girl band innocence with a 70’s rocket roar beat and 80’s glam swagger carried them four weeks to a spot in the Top 12 in the competition. They’ve since earned their battle stripes on tour with the Van’s Warped Tour and supporting groups like the SuicideGirls, the Horrorpops and Pink Spiders. Last year they lit their fuse at the Lobster Festival and the rocket roar from the crowd was enough to bring them back this year.

9:00pm
LOS STRAITJACKETS

Luchadores are hot. Surfer music is cool. Dance parties are fun. So what happens when you combine the three? You get Los Straitjackets, hands down one of the best, if not the very best, instrumental rock bands around. Grammy nominated for their collaboration with Eddy Clearwater on “Rock ‘N Roll City,” Los Straitjackets have appeared on Conan O’Brien, in the memorable independent film “Psycho Beach Party” and heard in commercials and movies whenever surf music is needed. Los Straitjackets is more than just a surf band though, their music has evolved from their remarkable music heritage with groups like the Planet Rockers, and the Halibuts. They’ve got a great show in store for the Lobster Festival, so stay late on Saturday night and enjoy!

HARD RAIN'S TRIBUTE TO BOB DYLAN

Andy & Renee, stars of the 19th annual Dylanfest and fresh from promoting their JPF Music Award nominated album, “Midnight Tea”, bring their renowned tribute to Bob Dylan to the Lobster Festival.

1:00pm
HAPPY HOLLOWS

It makes only sense that Happy Hollows follows our Dylan tribute. Perhaps no other band on the Los Angeles music scene takes the audience on a lyrical journey like Happy Hollows. One of the best live bands playing the Echo Park/Silverlake scene, they have been called an indie rock version of Queen. This is a band that will become one of the megastars of rock, one of the best live bands of the decade. Catch them at the Lobster Festival before while they are still playing small venues.

2:00pm
THE WORLD DEBUT, THE FIRST TIME ON STAGE TOGETHER:

MINI-MICHAEL JACKSON & TINY TINA TURNER REVUE.

Don’t miss this exciting show as Shorty Rossi pays a tribute to two of music’s greatest legends with Mini Michael Jackson and Tiny Tina Turner on stage together peforming their greatest hits.

3:15pm
IGOR & THE RED ELVISES

Party animals of the World Unite! The highest paid wedding band on the Kamchatka Peninsula has come to conquer San Pedro! Fresh from storming Moscow with their patented sound they call Soviet Surf Rock, Igor and his crew will shake your booty with songs like “Twist Like Uma Thurman” and “I want to see you Belly Dance”. There’s more, but why spoil the fun? See them for yourself Sunday afternoon at the Lobster Festival.

4:15pm
GRAM RABBIT

Winner of The LA WEEKLY’s annual "Best New Artist" Award, and fresh from performing at Coachella, San Diego Street Scene, and The Troubador, Richard Cromelin of the Los Angeles Times describes Gram Rabbit’s music: "This up-and-coming group out of Joshua Tree is a weird - and promising - amalgam. They appear ready to claim a place in the line of self-reliant, independent-minded artists who germinated in Southern California’s deserts, from Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart in the 1960’s to Queens of the Stone Age in the ‘90s."

5:15pm
DAVE WAKELING & THE ENGLISH BEAT

The King of Ska is back with his all star band, playing hits from The English Beat, General Public and some of his new songs from his soon to be released new album. Expect the unexpected and prepare to be blown away at the Lobster Festival.
