AUGUST 6, 2007 - SAN PEDRO, CA. - At 7:30 am on Friday, Sept. 14, the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival kicks off with a rumble on the waterfront at the Third Annual Lobster Breakfast. The 110 member "Cranberry Tarts of San Pedro" go up against Lomita's "Dames of Whinin' Roses" for the second time in a lobster hat throwdown to see whose hat will become the King of Crustaceans' Official Crown - and earn a donation for the winner's charity. The Cranberry Tarts will be defending their title this year. The 2006 Lobster Breakfast received television coverage in over 17 states and as far away as Hawaii and Alaska.
The sisters who will be strutting their hattitude belong to the Red Hat Society, a national "dis–organization" whose qualifications for membership include being over 50 and attending meetings in full regalia (red hat, purple outfit and usually a bright crimson feather boa).
"We think this is a wonderful way to have some fun, do some good and showcase LA's exciting waterfront," said Cranberry Tart Vice-Queen Dorothy Matich, last year's winner. "We're going to show those crimson chicks from Lomita what a radical fringe is all about."
Lomita's Dames of Whinin' Roses' Chapter Queen is confident that they will walk out of the Lobster Breakfast wearing the Crown of the King of Crustaceans. "Frankly, Scallop, we don't give a clam about the size of their chapter," said Lomita's Queen Mum Judy Kroesen. "We're the real red hat tamales in town and we'll put our purple posse's red hats up against any and all comers. If they think we are in this just for the halibut, they'd better think again. Our gals aren't floundering around and we're going home with the crown."
"I'd say that this is becoming too hat to handle, but I just learned that that pun was taken by Long Beach's chapter," said Jim Hall, producer of the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival. "Seriously, though, the Red Hat Ladies make the Lobster Breakfast a great way to have some fun while raising funds for the community." The 2006 Lobster Breakfast received television coverage in over 17 states and as far away as Hawaii and Alaska.
The Lobster Breakfast is also a fundraiser for the San Pedro Peninsula Chamber of Commerce who is selling tickets for $20.00 each. Seating is limited, but the public may attend by calling the Chamber of Commerce at 310-832-7272. 100% of the proceeds go to the Chamber. The breakfast menu includes an all-you-can-eat lobster casserole buffet, sliced fruit, coffee and juice. All food and expenses are donated by San Pedro Fish Markets and the Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival. The competition is held in the upstairs banquet room at San Pedro Fish Markets.
The Port of Los Angeles Lobster Festival opens at 5 pm on Friday, September 14 and runs through the weekend. Highlighting the free activities throughout the five-acre site will be the ScubaTour where visitors can try scuba diving in a 26,000 gallon heated tank, the NASCAR Street Tour on Friday night, the LobsterDog Pet Parade and the Brethren of the Coast's pirate camp.
The main stage will feature over a dozen of the hottest new music acts in the nation - from hard rock to progressive gospel including modern folk and tributes to heavy metal, ZZ Top and country rock. Headlining Sunday is Ambrosia. Admission is $8.00 for adults, kids under 12 get in free. Discount coupons good for $2.00 off admission are widely available and even downloadable at lobsterfest.com. Conveniently located at the end of the 110 Harbor Freeway, parking and shuttle buses are free. 2007 festival hours are: 5 pm to 11 pm, Friday, September 14; 11 am to 11 pm, Saturday, September 15; 11 am to 7 pm, Sunday, September 16.
